PET Bottle Scuffing: Trace the First Damage Location

Find where a scratch or scuff first appears instead of assuming the last machine caused it. Compare identified samples before and after successive stations. Separate cosmetic marking from cracks or damage that could affect package integrity and quality disposition.

Follow the observed pattern

What you observe What to compare next
Marks appear at a consistent height Compare that height with guide and contact locations. Record bottle rotation and contact pattern; physical inspection requires the approved energy-isolation procedure.
Damage increases during accumulation Compare queue occupancy, stop duration, contact and restart behavior using the same bottle lot. Include the full bottle condition and approved lubrication practice.
Only one bottle design is affected Compare geometry, material and actual dimensions against the approved handling design. Ask packaging and conveyor specialists to review contact points before specifying a coating or stronger bottle.

Evidence to send with a support request

Provide paired station samples, defect-height measurements, bottle drawings and lots, accumulation state, line speed and safe video evidence. Identify the first affected station and distinguish superficial scuffing from confirmed structural damage.

Illustrative diagnostic comparison

If a bottle is clear before one transfer and marked immediately afterward, retain both samples and their order. A downstream photograph cannot localize the cause alone. Any packaging redesign should be checked through filling, labeling and distribution rather than only at the suspected contact.

Confirm the next action

Record the bottle, cap and material lot; machine and format recipe; time, speed and operating state. Separate direct observations from suspected causes. Preserve an unchanged comparison and identify who approved any trial.

  1. Record the approved change, comparable before-and-after observations, defect counts with their denominators, and quality or maintenance approval. A symptom disappearing once does not establish a durable correction.
  2. Repeat the check during the operating state that originally produced the defect. Keep restart losses and rejected product in the record; a faster machine reading alone is not proof of improvement.

Use approved site procedures and the machine manual. Isolate energy before physical inspection or clearing a jam; never bypass guards or interlocks. Quality personnel decide containment and release of affected product. These guides do not prescribe universal pressure, temperature, torque or cleaning settings.
